bell hooks, Buddhism, & Beloved Community: A Valentine’s Day Event

As a Christian Buddhist, Black scholar, and love theorist, bell hooks teaches us what is means to be in better relationship with ourselves and the world.

While alive, bell hooks frequently quoted Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh saying, “Let’s throw this pebble into the water, it may not go far in the beginning, but it will ripple out.” That’s the power of a single loving act.

For Valentine’s Day, we invited our community to throw pebbles into the water with us by making cards for the friends, family members, and loved ones who remind us that healing is always an act of communion.

We celebrated bell hooks’ legacy through sharing excerpts of her work and engaging in what hook’s referred to as the art of loving, or in other words, taking intentional time to extend ourselves for the spiritual growth of another. We provided craft supplies and stamps so all our guests needed to bring was their creativity and tenderness. Delicious bagels were also served!
